Somerset Wiltshire Dorset Orchid Society

  • Third annual show 17th September 2016

We arrived bright and early on the oldest morning for months at th school.

The tables were set up and the various society displays started to take shape. By 9.30 it was almost finished ready for the judging.

The societies were South WEst Bristol and West Devon and our own. A late display was from Writhlington school,

Traders were Burnham Nurseries Kelvin Bush and Andy Mckeown. We had aabout 92 through the door, which was slightly up on last year and we did well with the tombola and food.

We started packing up and by 4,30 it was all over for another year.

It was an excellent show and well worth all the effort.

    I will post pictures shortly.

  • Devon Orchid Show

We went to the show in Honiton. It was a very warm day and Honiton was very busy. Had difficulty finding the hall, but eventually found it.

The displays were good and our display was too. Two memners, Richard Dolman and Andy Mckeown won awards. Richard had 4 and Andy 1. About 150 through the door is not too bad especially with the hot weather,..

    Pictures are under photos 14.

  • Hardy Orchids with Jeff Hutchings

The talk was excellent, with some good pictures. He told us which species are easy and which are not.

Jeff brought plenty of plants for sale and I managed to spend some money.

Several members also bought plants so we should see them in the future.

Well worth being there and I learned a lot about hardy orchids and how to grow them.

  • Open Day Display

We had an excellent display at Thorngrove today.

Thanks to Derek Beryl and Larry for providing plants and helping man the stand. We had a lot of enquiries and gave out a lot of flyers for the show.

  • April Meeting with Helen Millner

The meeting saw 19 members see a good talk on Restrepias. Part of the Pleurothalids, there are about 50 species. Mainly Tropical Montane habitas, they need humidity and intermediate temperatures.

Helen described the pollination with some extreme close up pictures. The table show was full with more each month.

The society will be having a display at the Thorngrove Garden Centre Open Day on 12th April.

The next meeting will be Jeff Hutchings and Hardy Orchids.

The Society won a silver medal at the Bristol and West Show last week. Well done.
